Kind News Humane Education

Kind News is a monthly publication by the National Association of Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE), youth educational affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).  The Minnesota Humane Society sponsored two classrooms to receive Kind News in the 2005/2006 school year.  Nineteen classrooms will receive Kind News in 2006/2007.

A classroom subscription includes 32 student copies, plus a teacher’s guide.  The theme of Kind (Kids in Nature’s Defense) News is kindness to people and animals, and a respect for natural habitats.  Its emphasis on humane values, such as fairness, compassion, and respect, encourages good character in children, and its colorful design, engaging subject matter, and simple vocabulary help get children enthused about reading.

All issues contain articles, games, riddles, cartoons, and projects for the students.  One issue of Kind News featured an article authored by a HSUS wildlife specialist who discussed sharing our world with wildlife, and an interview with a Kind Children’s book award winner on the research of her book about a young girl visited by a ghost dog who lived and died in a puppy mill.  Also included, in honor of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, were Critter Card Cutouts—pictures of shelter animals who have found new homes.

The reviews are out—children and teachers love it! If you are a teacher in Minnesota and would like to have Kind News in your classroom, or if you would like information on sponsoring a classroom, please either send us an e-mail or leave a message on our volunteer line at (651) 665-9311, menu option 9.
